-----------------

The Windows operating system often sets a default "click" sound which plays when you click on a link in Internet Explorer or browse folders in Windows Explorer. This also occurs every time you click a button or a frame is refreshed.

Many of us find this inexplicably annoying.

Windows 95/98/2000
1. Open the Start Menu / Settings / Control Panel.
2. Double click on the "Sounds and Multimedia" control panel.
3. Choose the "Sounds: tab, scroll down in the "Sound Events" window until you reach "Windows Explorer" and under this you will find "Start Navigation".
4. Click on "Start Navigation" and you will see a .wav file appear in the "Name:" box. This is the sound that is associated with the click sound.
5. In the "Name:" drop down menu, select (None) and then hit "OK". This will set no sound to be played when you're navigating on the web.

Windows XP/NT/Server 2003
1. Open the Start Menu / Settings / Control Panel
2. Double click on the "Sounds" icon in the control panel. In this control panel, Scroll down in the events window until you reach "Windows Explorer" and under this you will find "Start Navigation".
3. Click on "Start Navigation" and you will see a .wav file appear in the "Name:" box. This is the sound that is associated with the click sound.
4. In the "Name:" drop down menu, select (None) and then hit "OK". This will set no sound to be played when you're navigating on the web.

Windows Vista
1. Open the Start Menu / Control Panel
2. Double click on "Sound" control panel. Click the "Sounds" tab in the window that pops up. Scroll down in the "Program" list until you reach "Windows Explorer" -- under this, you will find "Start Navigation" (probably near or at the bottom). Click it.
3. Having clicked on "Start Navigation", the drop box under "Sounds:" becomes modifiable. The name of the *.wav file in the box is that which is associated with the click sound.
4. Click the drop box to show all the options, scroll to the top, and select "(None)". Hit "OK". This will set no sound to be played when you're navigating on the web.
